Redefining Cancer Research with 3D Biomaterial Models

Keynote Talk by Prof. Subhas C. Kundu, I3Bs – University of Minho, Portugal

Cancer research is entering a new era of innovation — one where 3D biomaterial-based models are transforming how scientists study tumors and test therapies. At the International Conference on Cancer Science and Research, Prof. Subhas C. Kundu will present his groundbreaking work on 3D in vitro cancer models using natural biomaterials for studying the cancer microenvironment and drug screening.”

🔬 The Future of Cancer Modeling

Traditional 2D cell cultures often fail to replicate the real behavior of tumors inside the body. Prof. Kundu’s work focuses on three-dimensional biomaterials that recreate the structural and biological complexity of real tumor tissues. These 3D models provide a more physiologically relevant environment for exploring how cancer cells grow, invade, and respond to treatments.

🌱 Innovative Use of Natural Biomaterials

In this keynote, Prof. Kundu highlights the power of natural polymers such as:

·         Collagen

·         Hyaluronic acid

·         Alginate

·         Silk

These materials are used to create hydrogels, scaffolds, nanofibers, and bioinks, enabling researchers to build realistic tumor microenvironments in the lab. Among them, silk-based biomaterials stand out for their biocompatibility, strength, and versatility, making them ideal for 3D cancer modeling and tissue engineering.

💊 Impact on Drug Screening and Biomedical Research

These 3D systems not only improve the accuracy of drug testing but also help reduce reliance on animal models, supporting ethical and sustainable research practices. By mimicking human tissues more closely, such models can significantly accelerate the discovery of effective cancer therapies.
